10 Bible Verses to Help with Depression

Depression is not a lack of faith; it is a real illness that can affect anyone. So, if you're living a life that feels heavy, painful, and filled with darkness, please do not lose hope. There is help in the Bible. In fact, there are several Bible verses to help with depression that can bring relief.  

Before covering these powerful Bible verses, there are a few truths Like this content on Facebook that I want you to hold onto as you battle depression.  First, the way you feel is not your fault and it does not change your identity in Christ Jesus. You are a child of the most high God and you are deeply loved by Him. He is extremely close to the brokenhearted and He is with you, even now.

Even though your depression is not a spiritual problem; when you combine your faith with God's Word, therapy and other treatments, there is enough power to heal you.  Depression, just like with any physical illness, it is not out of God's reach. 

So go to the Lord Jesus Christ daily, tell Him how you feel and rest in His presence, it will be the best decisions you’ll ever make.

10 Bible verses for Depression

Here are 10 Bible verses to read when your are depressed. As an added bonus we turned each of these Bible verses for depression into a prayer. 

Psalm 23:4 - Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Pray it - Heavenly Father, even though I feel surrounded by darkness right now, I will not fear. I know that you are with me and that you will comfort me. So I'll walk through this depression with complete trust in you.

2 Thessalonians 3:16 - "Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all."

Pray it - Lord Jesus, I know that you are the Prince of Peace. That's why at a time when my life feels anything but peaceful, I'm still hopeful. I pray that you will give me peace at all times in every way.

Psalm 3:3 - But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.

Pray it - Lord God, it has been extremely hard to keep my head up. I feel so heavy but I believe that you are my shield, my glory, and the lifter of my head. You will make my burden light.

Isaiah 40:31 - But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Pray it - Lord, help me to wait for you to renew my strength. For I know that when my strength is renewed, I'll mount up with wings like eagles, I'll run and not be weary, I'll walk and will not faint.

Matthew 11:28 - Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Pray it - Lord Jesus, I've been trying my best to overcome this illness but today I feel worn out and heavy laden. I've come to you now and I know you will give me the rest you have promised. Thank you for your love.

John 16:33 - I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

Pray it - Jesus, I'm in this world and I am suffering while I’m here but I believe in you. I believe with all my heart that you have overcome the world and that in you I will find peace.

Psalm 34:17-18 - When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Pray it - Father, this depression has crushed my spirit. I feel so brokenhearted but I'm here crying out for help because I know that you hear me. I know you will deliver me and your word does not lie.

Romans 15:13 - May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Pray it - God of hope, I believe that you will fill me with joy and peace. Even on days like these when life feels hopeless, I know that by the power of the Holy Spirit, I will abound in hope.

Psalm 9:9 - The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

Pray it - Lord God, this depression can make me feel so oppressed at times. I feel like I'm losing grip on my own life but you are my stronghold, you always have been and you always will be. So I will continue to run to you for protection in times of trouble.

Romans 8:28 - And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Pray it - Lord Jesus, life may not be good right now but I know that you are. I love you and I know that I'm called according to your purpose. For that reason, I know there's purpose in this pain and I know that it will work out for my good, even if I can't see how right now.

Finding Hope For Depression Through Christian Counseling

Finally, it is not a shame that you need support for depression.
