Touch is an essential part of our lives both physically and spiritually. Many people know that a lack of touch in babies or young children can stunt their growth.

But did you know that this does not change as we grow older?

Touch, though often overlooked, is a major driver of growth, healing, and comfort in our lives. It may even be one of the most important senses we have.

It is the mother of all senses and is the first one that develops in embryos at about 6 to 8 weeks. Patrick also says that the need for touch is so hardwired in our nervous system that without it we usually end up feeling unhealthy and depressed. He believes that it is extremely difficult to thrive without touch, even as an adult.

Although it is great that researchers and scientists have discovered how touch plays a vital role in healing, what's even better is the fact that the Bible confirms it. 

In the Word of God, we find that almost every healing either occurred when Jesus touched people, or when they touched Him. His disciples eventually received the power to heal as well, and even they had laid hands on people in order to do it.

To this day, you will find ministers and prayer warriors laying hands on people when they pray, this is because Jesus has taught us that touch has a healing and powerful effect, especially when combined with faith.

The Spiritual Power Of Physical Touch

Below are 10 Bible verses where people experienced the healing power of touch were healed by a touch.

But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”  -  Luke 8:46 (NIV)

He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. -  Mark 6:5 (NIV)

And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. -  Matthew 8:2-3 (ESV)

And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. -  Luke 20:50-51 (ESV)

Why is Touch so Powerful?

The warmth of physical contact builds strong relationships in ways that words sometime fail. Specifically, warm warmth helps to calm the nervous system. This activates the vagus nerve of the body that has a deep connection with the compassionate response and touches trigger release of oxytocia, or oxytocine aka love hormone.

Touch lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increases the amount of oxytocin, a neurochemical that promotes trust and cooperation. A warm touch can make others feel valued and cared for and lessen the feelings of discomfort, and stress. Studies have also found that touch can actually reduce the signs and symptoms of illness. 

The warmth of physical contact builds strong relationships in ways that words sometime fail. I even encourage the exchange of five-minute chair massages among friends at work. Studies have shown that they can dramatically reduce job stress, while increasing productivity and alertness.
