Praying For Your Marriage Based on 1 Corinthians 13

Praying For Your Marriage Based on 1 Corinthians 13

Do you pray for your marriage? How about your friend’s marriage or your children’s marriage. The reason why I ask is that I am sure you know the divorce rate is getting higher by the minute and the reason isn't always a bad choice of partner. In fact, more often than not, people choose the right partner, the one God ordained for them to be with. The problem is, we often forget that what God puts together, the enemy tries to break apart.

This is why it is so important to pray for your marriage and the marriage of your family, friends and loved ones. Prayer will build a hedge of protection around marriage, one that the enemy cannot come through. In each marriage, God created the husband, He created the spouse and He created marriage. He did not do all of that and then leave us alone to figure it out. He gave us two weapons to fight the attacks of the enemy in any area of our life, those weapons are His Word and Prayer, which is why the rest of the post will combine both into a powerful prayer for marriages.

1 Corinthians 13 Applied to Marriage

1 Corinthians 13 is known as the love chapter of the Bible.  This passage of scripture is one of the most powerful reminders of what true love looks like today, equally as important, what it does not look like. Even though the passage's words are frequently spoken at weddings, written in Valentine's Day cards, or included in notes to those we cherish, we can allow the words to grow stale and not allow the power contained in these verse to transform us.

I will like to challenge you to not allow this to happen. Allow the words of 1 Corinthians 13 to transform marriages into the way God meant for it to be by praying it everyday.

If you're ready to do this, I've written a prayer based on 1 Corinthians 13 that you can start praying over your marriage and other peoples marriage. Please fill in the name of your spouse when reading:

A Prayer About Love For Marriages Based on 1 Corinthians 13

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. ~ 1 Corinthians 13:4

Lord Jesus, help (spouse’s name) and I to be patient with each other and with others in every circumstance. Help us to always treat each other with kindness. Let us remember that there is no space for envy, pride, and boastfulness in our marriage. May we always want only the best for each other and support each other in every situation. (1 Corinthians 13:4)

It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. ~ 1  Corinthians 13:5

As we walk this marriage journey, I pray that (spouse’s name) and I, will love each other as You love us, unconditionally. That we will feel the kind of love, which enables us to not get angry easily and to keep no record of wrongs. May we honor each other and never be selfish knowing that marriage is a give and take and that you have placed us both in a position to help each other. (1  Corinthians 13:5)

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. ~ 1  Corinthians 13:6-7

Please help (spouse’s name) and I to always remain truthful; to trust and protect each other in good times and bad. And when times get bad, I pray that (spouse’s name) and I will continue to hope and persevere knowing that You will use every situation for our good. (1  Corinthians 13:6-7)

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. ~ 1 Corinthians 13:8

God, I pray today that (spouse’s name) and I will know without a shadow of a doubt that you are love. That love is above all and that love never fails. I pray that our love will grow stronger day by day. Not the selfish, attention-seeking type of love but the 1 Corinthians 13 type of love, this is the type of love that never fails. May we have the wisdom, knowledge, and power to do as you have commanded in our marriage. In Your holy name, I pray, Amen. (1 Corinthians 13:8).

Whether you are happily married or on the verge of divorce, this prayer is needed. Always remember as you continue to pray over your marriage, that the God who loves you, hears you and he will never leave you nor forsake you.

1 Corinthians 13 Wedding Gifts
Do you know someone else who would benefit from praying this prayer over his or her marriage, or perhaps know someone who is getting married soon? I have turned the above prayer into a beautiful printable that you can
purchase here for only $5.99.

It is fully editable in Google slides.  That means you can insert the husband’s or wife’s names, as well as change the background picture. It measures 8x10 inches, which makes it easy to frame and give as a unique and meaningful wedding, anniversary or just because of gift. There are two different versions.

  1. One a husband or wife to gift to their spouse
  2. One for someone to gifts to a couple (ie, allows you to insert both the husband’s name and wife’s name).
