Mental Health Struggles of a SAHM and How to Cope

Mental Health Struggles of a SAHM and How to Cope

I had packed up the last of my items from my desk and started off towards home. My last working day at the office had not been what I thought it would be, although nothing rarely is. I was about to embark on a brand new journey - being a stay at home mom. I had dreamed and longed for this day for years. Although I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, I had no idea the mental toll it would take on me!

Firstly, I found that I missed the routine. I’m someone who thrives on having a schedule and sticking to it. Being at home, there was no one mapping out my day and encouraging me to stay the course. Have you ever tried telling a two year old that wandering around outside wasn’t on the schedule for that day? I pushed so hard in those early days to maintain a schedule, to engage their minds, and to keep things moving. I quickly learned that, to be successful in my new journey, I would have to roll with the punches. Our schedule would have to be a partnership between me and the kids. When I gave in to this realization my mood began to improve.

I also struggled with the loss of my identity. When I worked outside the
ow to Cope with Stay-at-Home Mom Depressionhome I knew exactly who I was - I was a healthcare professional. Who was I now, just “mom”?? With a job we have that instant gratification when we complete an assignment. Being a parent, though, we don’t realize these results until much later. I had to remind myself that, according to The Bible, I was made in His image (Genesis 1:27). I wasn’t just a mom; I was a child of God! And I was taking care of His precious children. He knew exactly where I was in this phase of my life, and exactly how to calm my nerves and still my anxiety.

Being a mommy in general can feel very isolating, not to mention being a stay at home mom. I remember posting this on my social media when I was pregnant with our first child - “Sometimes pregnancy can be a lonely journey.” I’ve found that having someone else to relate to and ask questions to can really help to get rid of the isolation. Sometimes that looks like joining a local MOPS group, and sometimes it looks like inviting the mama neighbor and her kids over for coffee while your kids destroy the playroom together.

However you decide to cope with these struggles, or maybe struggles of your own not listed here, please know that you are not alone.

1.  Reach out to a trusted friend about how you’re feeling.

2.  Take a walk outside to get some fresh air and clear your mind.

3.  Roll around on the floor with your kiddos or try out the newest video game and let yourself go for a few minutes!

4.  Know that all these feelings are totally normal.

5.  Finally, know that this phase of life is so brief, but oh so sweet!
