I Love Jesus But Want To Die Review

I Love Jesus But Want To Die Review

Quote from I love Jesus But I want to Die

If you are currently praying to die or have ever prayed “God please take me away from this world.” Or thought “why won’t God kill me,” “I wanna die” or “I don’t want to live anymore God,” know you are not alone.  In fact, author Sarah J. Robinson recently published a book where she shares her personal journey with severe mental illness that includes suicidal thoughts.  I Love Jesus, But I want to Die explores the question “What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts?”

As a Christian therapist who has walked with other Christians who battle depression and suicidal thoughts, I am so excited the have a resource to recommend to clients so they can know that they are not alone.  In addition, to helping other Christians who are struggling with depression and suicidal ideation, I highly recommend this book for those who are supporting them.

I decided to review the audio copy of this book and from the first few minutes, it felt like I was having a chat over tea with a friend and not listening to a mental health book or memoir.

Sarah gently shares her experience with mental illness with the reader, including the fact that she first tried to kill herself eight months after she became a born-again Christian (talking about, dispelling the myth that a relationship with Christ make you immune to mental illness).

I Love Jesus, But I want to Die PinPin ItWhile reading this book, the reader will learn:

  • Why Depression does not define anyone and how to find peace while battling depression.
  • How to break free from the shame and stigma of depression, suicidal thoughts, and mental illness.
  • How to get the help they need or support a loved one in seeking help.
  • How to reconnect with a God who refuses to leave and partner with him in your own healing.

Throughout the I Love Jesus, But I want to Die, Sarah points out pitfalls that people may experience when they battle mental illness so the reader can avoid those same pitfalls.  She also gently offers advice and encouragement as only someone with the same lived experience can.  I love the fact that Sarah is sensitive to the needs of the reader and identifies parts of the book that may be triggering, which allows the reader the ability to decide whether to engage with those specific passages.
