Why 'God is Bigger than Your Problem' is More Than Just Words

Why 'God is Bigger than Your Problem' is More Than Just Words

Do you ever forget that God is bigger than your problems? If you are anything like me, it probably happens frequently. Fortunately, my strong sense of anxiety will remind me that I am trying to solve my own problems, and it is time to turn them over to Jesus Christ.

Bible Story Examples of God Being Bigger Than Our Problems

One of the best examples of God being bigger than your problems is the story of Joseph in Genesis 37-45. Joseph's brothers are sick of the favoritism shown toward Joseph by their father, so they sell him into slavery. He ends up in Egypt and eventually winds up in prison but is released when Pharoah has a bad dream. As a result of Joseph's interpretation of the dream, Pharoah puts him in charge of managing resources ahead of the famine the dream predicts. Fast forward several years into the famine, which has reached his family in Canaan. The 10 oldest brothers hear that Egypt has food, so they head for Pharoah's stockpiles.

It takes a couple chapters before Joseph reveals his identity, but when he does, he reassures his brothers in Genesis 45:5 "But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life." (ESV)

Not only was God bigger than Joseph's and his brothers' problems, but the Lord God also saw the problems coming, and used the trouble Joseph had been in to move his family into a place of safety where they could become the nation of Israel. God is actually working in our problems to move us where he wants us.

For New Testament examples, think of every healing story in the Gospels; people at the end of their options, like the woman who had hemorrhaged for 12 years in Luke 8:43-48. She had spent all her money on doctors who hadn't been able to help her, and being considered "unclean," she was completely isolated. But because she believed that God is bigger than her problems, she knew all she had to do was reach out and touch the hem of Jesus's robe. The crowd was pressing in from every side, but Christ felt the power leave Him when she was healed.

This story is sandwiched into the story of Jairus's plea for help for his dying daughter. The crowd was slowing Jesus down on the way to heal the little girl, and He was slowed even more when He stopped to talk to the woman who was healed. After Jesus told her to go in peace, Jairus got the message that Jesus Christ was no longer needed because his daughter had already died. Was that problem too big for the Son of God? Of course not, because Christ Jesus is more powerful even than death.

Why Is It Hard to Believe That God Is Bigger Than Your Problem?

Like the servant from Jairus's home, we think there are some things that are too big for God. Maybe that's because you have suffered losses that God didn't stop from happening. Does that mean He can't? Absolutely not. Often God is doing something bigger WITH your problems, as with Joseph.

Or maybe you think you are supposed to solve your problems yourself because God doesn't want to be bothered. Instead, God wants to be intimately involved in the details of your problems. He wants us to completely surrender our problems to him so that he can use them for something huge, something better than we can imagine, and that will bring glory to our everlasting God.

What Bible Verses say God is Bigger Than Our Problems?

Everywhere we look in the Bible, we find Bible verses full of evidence of that. Probably the most powerful statement that God is bigger than any problem is when our Lord said in John 16:33, "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (ESV)

Christ Jesus has overcome the world, ALL the world, from the beginning of life to death. His everlasting kingdom and its great power make our problems look miniscule.

My favorite verse is "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think." Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV)

Why would we want to try to solve our own problems when God's solution is exceedingly abundantly more than we could ask or think? God is able to do things beyond our wildest dreams.

Hard things and troubles will come, but the Bible gives us hope for our future here on earth and in heaven. When we stand on the promise of the Spirit's presence continually with us, our fears are no match for the Lord who is bigger than our problems.

When life throws your faith a curve, try the following advice from the Bible.

Tell God About Your Troubles and Thank Him for His Faithfulness

Surrender Your Problems to God

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7 (NKJV)

Remember Your Understanding is Limited

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV)

Seek the Kingdom First

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33 (ESV)

It Is Well

Keep Your Mind on the Lord

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)

Delight in Your Weakness

My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV)

Look for the Escape Route

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)

Final Thoughts on God being Bigger than Our Problems

When you are struggling to find an answer to your problem, remember that you can fall into the Lord's outstretched arm, and He will carry you and give you His power. Ask for wisdom and understanding from His Spirit. Sprinkle your prayers generously with thanksgiving for all He has done.

Rest in the truth that when you seek the Lord, He will listen and save you.
